| Biography | Peter Ruzicka (*1948) received his instrumental and theoretical training at the Hamburg Conservatory (piano, oboe, composition theory) with composition studies with Hans Werner Henze and Hans Otte. He studied law and musicology in Munich, Hamburg and Berlin. His works have been performed by leading orchestras and ensembles, such as the Berlin Philharmonic, the Vienna Philharmonic and all German radio symphony orchestras. His opera «CELAN» had its world premiere at the Dresden State Opera in 2001. Ruzicka's music theatre «HÖLDERLIN» was premiered at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden Berlin in 2008. The world premiere of his opera «BENJAMIN» took place at the Hamburg State Opera in 2018. From 1979 to 1987 Peter Ruzicka served as artistic director of the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra, and from 1988 to 1997 as artistic director of the Hamburg State Opera and the Hamburg Philharmonic. In 1996, he succeeded Hans Werner Henze as artistic director of the Munich Biennale, a post he held until 2014. From 2001 to 2006, Ruzicka took over as artistic director of the Salzburg Festival. As a conductor, Peter Ruzicka has also led the Vienna RSO, the Camerata Salzburg, the Gulbenkian Orchestra Lisbon, the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, and the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, among others. |
