Dong Zhou
BiographyDong Zhou (*1992) (no pronouns/she) is a Hamburg-based composer, multimedia artist and performer. Zhou holds a bachelor's degree in Music Engineering from the Shanghai Conservatory and a master's degree in Multimedia Composition from the Hamburg University of Music and Drama. Zhou has won several awards, including the 2018 International Computer Music Conference Hacker-N-Makerthon first prize and the Not-a-ear award from the Stuttgart Filmwinter, Festival for Expanded Media 2022. Zhou was finalist in 2019 Deutscher Musikwettbewerb as well. Zhou's work was included in Microsoft's «Sound of World» ringtone collection and received commissions from the Shanghai International Arts Festival, CLAB Festival Hamburg and Zentrum für Kunst und Medien Karlsruhe. Zhou is currently a doctoral candidate at the Institut für Kultur und Ästhetik digitaler Medien of the University of Leuphana, a member of Stimme X e.V. Zeitgenössisches Musiktheater Norddeutschland and Deutscher Komponistenverband Hamburg.

ABOUT Dong Zhou: «Cruelty of Obedience»

Sound materials from SYNTRX synthesiser, composed during the residency in EMS Stockholm in 2022. The title was from «The House at Old Pimen» by Marina Tsvetaeva, regarding to the fate of A.A., the second wife of Ilovaisky. Produced in EMS Stockholm in 2022.
