| Biography | The Six Tones is a leading representative of the lively new music scene in Hanoi, and a platform for encounters between traditional and experimental cultures in Asia and the west. The core of their practice is, since 2006, an ongoing project of mutual learning between musicians from Vietnam and Sweden. The Six Tones are Nguyễn Thanh Thủy (who plays đàn tranh) and Ngô Trà My (who plays đàn bầu) with the guitarist Stefan Östersjö (also playing many other stringed instruments) and the saxophonist and live-electronics improviser Henrik Frisk. The main ambition with The Six Tones is to create a foundation for a meeting between two distinct musical cultures on equal terms. Building on a concept of mutual learning, musical traditions from Viet Nam and Europe are brought together into music that aims to reach beyond a mere collage-like superimposition of elements and strive for a more complex and experimentally oriented sound. |
