Biografie | Frequent Defect is a collective of sound and visual artists mining the fringes of art and club experience. Since 2016, Frequent Defect has been growing as a multifaceted platform, curating and exploring various mediums on which local and international artists can freely convey and experiment with their work. The initial purpose was to serve as a commentary on modern society by eschewing what is seen as overworked connections to the past, breaking censorship and restricted subject matter. The subjects put forth stem from the abundance of obstacles imposed on societies both on individual and social levels, their various implications along with subversive and transgressive methods that could serve as rational vessels for renewal. Since 2017, the collective had started organizing events in their own space in the industrial area of Mkalles, outer Beirut, after a short residency at Yukunkun club. For the first couple of years, the warehouse was running as a clandestine club and slowly transformed into what we would call a modular space. In 2019, Mkalles Warehouse expanded to become a home for the collective, where living and multi-functional workspaces were put together to facilitate artistic production, curate residencies and capacitate the collective on a daily basis, thus promoting a new creative flow and opening the way to further collaborations among the artists. Frequent Defect is also the name of the flagship event that the collective hosts, aimed at tackling socio-political as well as individualistic issues through a club night, and where each themed edition is represented by the artists through many disciplines, including music, visual art and installations. It is devised as a showcase for their pioneering and forward-thinking works. Therefrom, other event series were birthed, expanding into broader focus targets. These series explore other cultural and artistic brackets, based on socially linked or themed genres, opening up the floor to other realms of the sonic and visual spectrums and serving a more extensive artistic base. This enabled more artists working in these different brackets to be able to develop through the platform. Among the other series are «ten hymns for corrosion», «Unstated Defect», «Grime and Punishment», «±12V» and «Listening Curves». Some of the prominent collaborations that have been made throughout the years were with figures like YoYo Ma, entities such as Irtijal Experimental Festival, Zoukak Theater Company, Exist festival, labels such as Morphine records, Modular mind, Syrphe and VV-VA, and Barakunan publication. Frequent Defect also hosts workshops and talks, ranging from artistic practices to production techniques. This branch helped share and expand on the aforementioned principles within the community both locally and internationally, and where the focus would also be on discussing philosophical approaches and how these affect the artists’ modus operandi. All the efforts put forth by this community have since been gaining ground and materializing in various projects, covering a large spectrum of mediums. Frequent Defect has gained an even more tenacious spirit throughout the last few years of distress which solidified the innate motivation to grow with each other by defying circumstances. Frequent Defect aims at providing a safe area where vivid and radical artistic expressions, ideas and performances are nurtured to further challenge a constant stream of control, evolving towards an organized autonomy allowing artists to materialize their visions and showcase their art. |
